Patient involvement in medical research

Medical research provides new medicines and diagnostic techniques, improves treatments and the way of providing healthcare.
Research studies rely on volunteers. Some involve healthy members of the public, while others involve patients during their care and treatment.
It is entirely up to you whether or not you want to get involved. If you decide not to participate, it will not affect your treatment or care in any way.
Hospitals that offer their patients the possibility to take part in research studies, are generally the ones that also provide the latest and best available treatments.

The aims of medical research

Benefits of taking part

  • Develop new treatments and medicines;
  • Develop new diagnostic techniques;
  • Prevent illnesses;
  • Improve quality of life;
  • Improve the understanding of medical conditions.
  • You will be helping others, and possibly yourself, by helping to identify more effective medical treatments or diagnose techniques;
  • You will have more contact with medical staff than you normally do;
  • you will have the opportunity to learn more about your medical condition, which may help you to manage it better;
  • you may feel you are taking a more active role in your healthcare.
